Jack Lew and Penmanship

   I quit using notebooks for writing three years ago. I found that when I wrote large bodies of work on paper, if it wasn't crap, or if it was a book chapter, I always had to type it out on the computer. This is double work, and grossly inefficient. The only time I use paper now is when I have to write the kids a sick note for school or take notes for what I am already writing.    Today's news told me about how Mr. Lew lied multiple times about the budget deficit. No surprise there. There are threats of a fillibuster; albeit, Jeff Sessions of Alabama is making the noise. Even though I heard this story at 6:45 this morning (1/2 cup coffee consumed), I laughed. It was like saying, "This guy lied on national television, he can't hold such a high post in our government!" What? He lied? The Last Stamp

An insolvent business can either diversify or dissolve. The rate at which the US Postal Service is losing money is ludicrous at this point, but it's not all their fault. This short article from CNN Money sheds some light on the other factors. Congress. The USPS lost $5 billion in 2011, and $16 billion in 2012. I remember hearing about their massive losses for a few years now. They have been working on it since, through layoffs and rate increases to no avail. The forecast is for more, and we (taxpayers) will have to help them. It's another case of making a cut "here", all the while letting the deficit from "there" fall in the lap of our social net. Where do Americans go when they get laid off, with few real job options? Either way, we will be helping fellow Americans who have been strangled by our government again. Distraction

There are probably hundreds of people and things vying for my attention today. Some of these things will turn my head, others will be ignored. Every morning is another chance to shake the things that don't matter. I have a tendency to work too much on jobs that could easily be done another time, or are completely unnecessary, but sometimes the distinction is impossible to make. The worst distraction I have faced recently has to do with social media. I hear all the time that writers should be using at least two forms of social networking in order to build a following that should one day lead to more success. The problem is that I can't stand it; especially Facebook. There are a few people that I talk to, and those I consider to be actual friends, but overall it is an annoyance and a huge distraction.
